On Sunday, September 22, 2013, our beloved Rita passed peacefully into the arms of our Lord surrounded by family and friends after losing her courageous battle with cancer. Born November 6, 1944, Rita graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Little Rock Arkansas and achieved a Bachelor of Arts Degree from St. Louis University. Rita moved with her family to San Antonio in 1968 where she worked as a Criminal Justice Coordinator for Alamo Area Council of Governments. In 1973 Rita joined the U.S. Department of Education as Assistant Director/Trainer for The Region VII Training and Resource Center at Trinity University. In 1981 Rita joined her father’s advertising firm. As head of the Retail Division, Rita managed several major accounts including The Benson Automotive Group for Texas and Louisiana. In 1997 Rita accepted a position, as Assistant Vice President and Marketing Director for Security National Bank and, following a merger with Wachovia, became the Marketing and Sales Manager at Wachovia San Antonio until 2005. In 1993, Rita received the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance given by the San Antonio Chapter of American Women in Radio & Television and she received the Robert Schumann Memorial Scholastic Award from the American Institute of Banking in 1998. In 2005 to 2008, Rita served as Alumni Coordinator for Central Catholic High School.
Growing up a devout Catholic, Rita considered her faith to be the ‘bedrock’ of her life. In 2010, to further her understanding of the teachings of Jesus Christ and pursue her desire to be of service to others, Rita enrolled at The Oblate School of Theology to prepare for a pastoral ministry. Rita’s greatest joy was being with her family and friends loving our special holiday celebrations, and frequent get-togethers. Her greatest love was for her son Lee, daughter-in-law Nikki, and her beautiful new grandson, Evan Marcus.
Rita is preceded in death by her mother, Rita Quinn Schonhoff, and father, Robert L. Schonhoff, Sr. She is survived by her son Lee Michael Imbimbo, daughter-in-law Nikki, and grandson Evan Marcus Imbimbo of San Antonio; siblings Elise Schonhoff Cox and husband, Bill of San Antonio, and Robert Lee Schonhoff II and wife Patsy of New Braunfels; her stepmother, Kathleen O’Hara Schonhoff, and stepbrothers, Dr. John Martinez O’Hara and wife, Dora, and Brian Martinez O’Hara; and nieces and nephews Marlise, Meghan, Rob, Derek and Ryan.
Rita’s family would like to express their gratitude to Pat Thompson and Odessey Hospice for their loving care of Rita during her final days.
