He grew up in Beaumont, Texas. He then went on to the Chicago School of Art and the University of Texas at Austin where he was in the Lambda Chi fraternity.
He was introduced through a neighbor to Irmgard Haube, a recent immigrant from Germany. Bob and Irma fell in love and married in 1952. Shortly after they married, Bob served in the Medical Corps Division of the Army in the Korean War.
Bob used his art talents to depict injuries during surgical procedures (before X-ray technology was widely available). After he returned from service, Bob and Irma moved to San Antonio where they had three children. Bob worked in advertising, including starting his own company, Robert B. Johnson Advertising, and then later with Texas Photo Type. Bob was a very gifted artist and sculptor.
He retired early from advertising to pursue art full time, and was involved in many art groups (including serving as President of the Texas Watercolor Society). He enjoyed traveling to Mexico, Europe and China on painting trips. Bob also used his gift of writing to share childhood stories and published articles about their travels in our local newspaper. He was publisher of the first San Antonio Monthly magazine in 1981. Bob and Irma also loved spending time at their property in Bandera, where Bob painted while Irma gardened, cooked and entertained their family and friends.
Bob was lovingly cared for over his latter years by Olga Acuna and her husband, Daniel, whom Bob deeply loved and appreciated. Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Capt. Jerry Boone and Elizabeth Meier, his loving wife who he affectionately referred to as his "Tweety Bird," Irma, his daughter, Shari J. Pruitt, and is survived by his son, Ray Boone, daughter Elizabeth Snow and husband, Corbin (children Corby, Caleb, Henry and Wendell), and Shari's husband, Kenneth (children Lauren, Kendall and Chase [and Lauren's husband, Pete, and children, Ansley and Johnny]).
