I served as Artillery FO for Capt. Mercado’s Alpha company 2/18 First Infantry Div. During his first tour in Vietnam. As such I was always within arms length with him and we slept back to back for many a rainy night. I was very sorry to learn of his passing. He was a good man.

I regret that we never got together while you were in Dallas. I always admired your ability to work with poeple and know from having observed you how great you must have been as a teacher and coach. You will be remembered for all the good things that you did for others.

May Kim rest in peace, I grieve with you the loss of a classmate.

I am extremely saddened to hear of Kim's death. I served as his artillery FO with Alpha company 2/18 Infantry in Vietnam and we were close. I clearly remenber the day his first daughter was born and the photos he showed me a few weeks later. I regret I did not maintain contact with him over the past 37 years. My condolences to his family.

I did not know Kim personally only through church. However, you could see the presence of God within this wonderful man and it was evident how much he loved his wife, Barbara, in how he tenderly treated her. Kim will sorely be missed by us at St. George Episcopal Church.

 The memory of Coach Mercado, the greatest inspiration in my life, he taught me the reason for sterness,and gave me much knowledge to apply in sports and life. Some may not have liked his manor of doing thingsmilitary stylebut I did. He taught me to always put forth my best effort, and that there isn't anythinhg that one can't accomplish. I was sad to learn of Mr. Mercado's passing. I was back in Boerne when my dad showed me the newspaper... I went to high school with Katrin and have fond memories of Mr. Mercado from basketball games. He also coached my summer league team at one point. I remember his enthusiasm for the sport and his desire for the team to play well. He also always seemed to be in a good mood and had a smile when he greeted you. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Best,

I remember Kim from our days at the service academies, he at West Point, I at the Naval Academy. We made the usual bets on the Army-Navy football games, each winning a school bathrobe from the other during our 4 years of wagers. We met briefly on the field after each game. We also stayed with one-another during the Second Class year exchange visits. 
I am sorry to learn of Kim's death. Please extend my sympathy to his family and loved ones.

Kim was someone from whom I lost touch as we went our seperate ways after Jefferson. When I read his accomplishments I realize that he was the best of our class.

Robert Mercado was the coach for our freshman basketball team, at Fox Tech High School, for the 2002-2003 year before he retired. He taught the whole team many things on and off the court. I send my highest condolences to his family, knowing he will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.

Having only known him for one year at Fox Tech High School, he was an asset to the mathematics department and did touch the lives of many children in such a positive way. He will be missed by all.

I had the good fortune to be stationed with LTC Mercado at Ft.Huachua, Az in the late 1970s. I was a newly promoted Major and the Chief, Nurse Anesthtist and he was Director of Clinical Services. He was an outstanding soldier and an excellent leader. He wore the uniform with pride and dignity and encouraged others to do so. He was also a fierce competitor. I had the opportunity to run with him many times and also play softball against him. I think we were some of the first runners to run the Mule Mountain Marathon. I remember one softball game we 
were playing one afternoon and LTC Mercado hit a ground ball. He ran full tilt into the first baseman in an attempt to knock the ball loose. Tempers flared. The next inning I hit a ball and was running home trying to score and there was LTC Mercado blocking the plate. Neither one of us was going to back down. Another collision occurred. Tempers, from players, on both sides flared but LTC Mercado immediately took control of the situation by saying it was a fair play at home plate and he would have done the same thing and it was not payback for the play before when he ran into the first baseman. He also entrusted me to adminster anesthesia to his daughter Katrin. He was a concerned and caring parent. I had the opportunity over the next 20 years to run into LTC Mercado at various basketball and other sporting events in San Antonio. We both coached youth sports. You could tell that he enjoyed coaching. The last time I saw him was several years ago at the Northwood Animal Hospital. He was taking his dogsI believe for a check up. We talked briefly. I was saddened to read of his death in the paper today. My condolences to his family. COL Ret John Sherner, ANC

It seems like just yesterday that we sat outside at David and Laura's enjoying his conversation about his history in the military. Our classmate was the picture of, and had the natural bearing of an army officer and leader. We regret his passing, but we will remember the good times of our youth. We hope his family will be comforted at this time by his many strengths and good qualities.

I was saddened to learn of the recent death of Kim. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you in this time of grief. Kim and I were classmates and our paths in the service crossed many times over the years. I'll always remember his great head of hair, infectious smile, and quick laughter. Kim was a great soldier, a good friend and always lived by the motto of West Point. As he takes his place in the Long Gray Line, I join all his classmates in saying"Well Done".

 Jim and I are so very sorry to hear of Kim's passing. On the few occasions at which we were privileged to meet and chat with him, we found him to be genuine, intelligent, amiable and interesting to talk with. We know what a loss this is to you, but it is also a loss to those who knew him but casually. He was a fine person, and one who served his country well. May the knowledge that he had a life well lived comfort you now that he is no longer with us. He left the earth better than he found it, and what better tribute can there be for a man?

Kim and I met in ROTC at Jefferson our sophomore year and were good friends in high school early. Our paths crossed again when he returned to San Antonio at the end of his military career, I think at some Jeff reunion. We exchanged business cards and planned to have lunch later, but it never seemed to happen. He was a wonderful person, and I was grateful to read about his family and career in the paper. I know you will all miss him, but he is now in God's hands.
