After graduating from West Point, LTC Mercado served two tours of duty in Vietnam and was honored with the Bronze Star 4 OLC, a Bronze Star with Velour Device, the Soldier's Medal, Vietnam Honor Medal w/Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Army Commendation Medal with Velour Device, Meritorious Service Medal 2 OLC and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm.
In addition to his successful 20 year military career, he was also acknowledged with many awards for his achievements as a teacher/coach of both boys and girls sports over a 12 year period.
He was dedicated to the children whose lives he touched.
He was also marathon runner and had a passion for painting unique military figurines expressing his love for history.
He is survived by wife, Barbara Mercado; daughters, Antonia Boyle and husband, LCDR Kevin Boyle, USN of Slidell, LA, Andrea Amann of Munich, Germany, Katrin Lawson and husband, Rex, Jr. of Houston, TX; stepchildren, David Fuller and wife, Laura of San Antonio, Alyson Woolley and husband, Ken of Fair Oaks, TX; eight grandchildren; mother, Sarah Mercado of San Antonio, TX.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions may be made to the Leukemia Foundation Society.
