Bob's family meant everything to him. Mentioning his grandchildren to him always put a smile on his face. When they excelled he would stop by my cubicle and tell me about them. Bringing a smile to both of our faces since grandchildren are the best!

My Division NCOIC at Headquarters U.S. Army Europe, Bob was one of those rare individuals who could do anything and everything. It didn't matter whether it was in Germany or in the Balkans, Bob would take the mission and run with it. Because he was involved, you could absolutely count on a success, every time. He set a high standard for himself and would bend over backwards to help another Soldier meet the standard. I missed his counsel the very minute he left the organization and went to a new duty assignment. I'm proud to have served with him and to have been able to call him my friend. 'Sending heartfelt condolences to Ursula, Daniel, Angie, grandchildren, & all family. Our family met Bob, Ursula, & family in 1992 while we were neighbors in Heidelberg, Germany. The Van Winkle moved in across the hall in our quarters on PHV. We instantly became friends. There are so many great memories of Bob, however, one that has always stayed close in my mind is a time that Bob was watching our kids so Ursula & I could go by ourselves to a movie on post. Our daughter, Stefanie, was about 6 years old & really had Bob wrapped around her finger. She climbed into his recliner, slid over to one side and patted the empty space beside her for Bob to sit do he could paint her nails; he did a great job!! Our wish for this dear family is for them to keep sweet memories of their beloved husband, father, & grandpa forever. May God bless & hold you all in his loving embrace. Story: At his good bye party in Germany in 2001 he saw my daughter playing with a puppy we'd gotten. He asked her how old she was and how old her puppy was. I thought that was kind of odd. But he came over later and said he could see how attached they were and that I needed to make sure the dog lived until my daughter was in college. He said that's important. Pay attention to that. I said fine. Daughter is in college. Dog is still alive.
