Rodolfo attended Thomas Jefferson High School and graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Pharmacy. In 1955 Rodolfo married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Astol and they remained in love their entire life. After graduating from the University of Texas, that same year he opened Davila Pharmacy next to the Davila Food Store which was established by his grandfather Frank Davila in 1904. Having grown up on San Antonio’s westside, Rodolfo always wanted to provide quality medical care to the underserved community. Rodolfo was proud of the area that he grew up in and was a founding member of the Avenida Guadalupe Association whose mission was the revitalization of San Antonio’s Westside. Rodolfo served on many boards including the Frost Bank San Antonio Advisory Board and the University of Texas College of Pharmacy Advisory Council. In 1996, Rodolfo established The Davila Family Endowed Presidential Scholarship at the University of Texas College of Pharmacy to help South Texas pharmacy students with tuition. More recently Rodolfo established The Rudy and Dorothy Davila Endowed Scholarship with SAISD to encourage students from San Antonio’s inner city to attend college.
Rodolfo was awarded the William J Sheffield Outstanding Alumnus Award, the highest honor paid to an alumnus in 2004. In 2013 he received the Legend of Pharmacy award from the University of Texas, which is awarded to friends of the College of Pharmacy whose contributions to the pharmacy profession are considered above and beyond or "legendary.” Rodolfo and Dorothy had two children, Rosette and Rodolfo Davila III. He was very proud that both children graduated from the University of Texas College of Pharmacy.
Along with his dedication to pharmacy, Rodolfo was an avid runner, logging over 100 miles a week when training for marathons. He competed in numerous races across Texas and Louisana including the 1975 inaugural Las Colonias de San Antonio. His best time for a marathon was 3 hours 7 minutes keeping a pace of nearly 7 minute miles and in 1979 qualified for the Boston Marathon.
Dad was loved and will be greatly missed.
