Roger Jesse Hernandez

Roger J. Hernandez, 73, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on October 7, 2017, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on September 9, 1944 in San Antonio to Louis G. and Blanche Cantu Hernandez.

He honorably served in the U.S. Navy, completing two tours in Vietnam.

He joined the track and field team where he developed a deep passion for running. Along his journey, he made many friends and encouraged people to begin running, impacting countless lives. Family and exercise were vital to Roger's life. When he was not out running, you could find him on the golf course, or playing poker tournaments, which he equally enjoyed. Roger was the type of person to never know a stranger, anyone who had the blessing of meeting him became an instant friend.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Irma G. Hernandez; son, Roger (Sharon); daughter, Lorraine; grandchildren, Roman, Sean and Deana; siblings, Roland (Nancy), Susan (Joe), Madeline (Victor), Blanche and Diane; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A rosary will be on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at 7:00 PM at the Porter Loring North Chapel.

Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 1:15 PM at St. Matthew's Catholic Church followed by interment at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
