

Roger Chilton Hill Sr. went peacefully to be with our Lord on December 19, 2022. Roger was born in San Antonio, 1922, son of Russell C. Hill and Emmie Giesecke Hill.He was a treasure, a mentor, a friend, a thoughtful companion to many and a true gentleman. He asked for a short and sweet obituary.
Roger was a friend to so many of every generation, irrespective of background or station in life. He was always available, supportive and a great listener. He was engaged in every conversation, giving you his undivided attention and seemingly included a compliment in each instance. He sincerely cared for those whose lives he touched, including the thousands of employees he so aptly led in his career. He was humble, unassuming, and quick witted. Even during his last days, he charmed the nurses and family with his wry humor.
He was known in San Antonio as a businessman that could complete an important transaction with only a handshake. He was an honest man in every sense of the word and taught others the meaning of integrity. He flew his own plane for decades and was an avid traveler, traveling to almost every continent and exotic locale with family and friends. He was very active in tennis for many years becoming nationally ranked in the 35 and over category. Later in life, he became an avid golfer and a man you wanted in your foursome for the fellowship. He still holds the record for most holes in one at the San Antonio Country Club in a single month.
He graduated from the University of Texas and Harvard Business School. He served in World War II in England and France with final rank of Captain, US Army. He was the founding President of Clarke Printing Co. and Clarke Checks, which later became Harland Clarke. He was a former Board Member of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce; founder and Past President of San Antonio Council on Alcoholism; Past President of San Antonio Research and Planning Council; Boss of the Year selected by San Antonio Secretaries Association in 1959; Father of the Year; Executive Council, Alamo Area Boy Scouts; and Board Member and Chairman of the American Institute for Character Education. He was President of the San Antonio Country Club, a founding member of the Argyle Club and a member of the Order of the Alamo.
He married Elizabeth Potter during the war and together they had five sons, Roger Jr., Russell, Eric, Chris, and Bruce. Later he married Frances Moore and had a daughter, Stacey and helped raise two stepchildren, Renee, and John. Later in life, Roger found yet a third love and married Jackie Mery. Jackie lovingly cared for Roger who was blessed to live to be 100 years old. He had numerous beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as the loving spouses of his surviving children and grandchildren.

A celebration of Roger’s life will take place on Thursday January 5, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 510 Belknap Place, San Antonio, Texas 78212.
