On Friday April 5, 2024, our beloved father passed away from complications due to cancer he did not know he had until it was too late. He graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 1960 and during his time there, met and married Wanda Nicholas. During their 49 years together, they had many things happen, including the birth of their first son, Charles Wayde Nicholas having the audacity of being born on Texas/OU game day – causing them to miss the game; and their second son, Laurence Eliot Nicholas being born on their anniversary – it did make it easier to remember both occasions!
Dad did many things during his working career starting out serving in the Army as a Transportation Corps Officer from 1960-1962 and then the reserves from 1962-1966, obtaining the rank of Captain.
From the Army, Dad spent the next 20 years working for the largest private foods company, Anderson Clayton in the US and then 2 more in his much-loved Mexico. During his time there, he had numerous different positions in Administration, Marketing and Management before his first of many retirements.
After a few years of living back in the US, Bo Pilgrim asked Dad if he would be interested in taking Pilgrim’s Pride to Mexico, an opportunity that he and Mom could not refuse. He spent the next 10 years doing just that, finally retiring when Pilgrim’s became the solid #2 poultry producer in Mexico.
His last official employment was with Ray & Berndtson Executive Search Company. He spent another 10 or so years before finally retiring and moving back to the US to his home in Horseshoe Bay.
While working, he served on the Board of Directors for the US/Mexico Chamber of Commerce, the American Chamber of Commerce, served as President for 4 ½ years for the American Society, and the Benevolent Society, and served on their board for over 15 years while at the same time forming the University of Texas Exes Mexico City Chapter and becoming the FIRST Pink Lady at the American Hospital!
Although his formal employment stopped, that did not mean he did. Once he got to Horseshoe Bay, he started looking for ways to help people and he found a few; reactivating the Highland Lakes Chapter of the Texas Exes and serving as President until his death. During that time the Chapter earned 4 Star Status and increased their Scholarship fund each year! At the same time, he also worked with the Chamber of Commerce, Falls on the Colorado Museum and served as the President of his local HOA, not to mention spending time with friends and family.
Dad is survived by his younger brother, Larry, his two sons, Wayde and Eliot, one unofficial daughter, Queta and his Grandson, Alan.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at the Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2102 N 1604 East, San Antonio, TX 78232.
If you would like, you can honor his life with a memorial donation via check to the Ron and Wanda Nicholas scholarship fund. The funds will be used for granting scholarships to local students who will attend UT Austin.
