Rosalinda “Rosy” Gamboa Avelar died on June 5, 2024, at her home in San Antonio, Texas, surrounded by family and loved ones, after a long battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Andrew Avelar; her son, Joshua R. Avelar, Esq. (Sarah); her sisters, Benita Garcia (Richard) and Sandra Gamboa (Atanacio Lopez); and her brothers, Juan Gamboa (Antonia) and Edward Gamboa (Alexandria). Rosy was preceded in death by her mother, Altagracia G. Gamboa; her father, Margarito Gamboa; and her grandniece, Kaila Riojas.
Rosy was born in San Antonio as the fourth of five children on December 5, 1961. Rosy graduated from Fox Tech High School in 1980, and married her high school sweetheart Andrew in 1983. She spent most of her working career in the insurance industry. Rosy was known to be affectionate and nurturing to the children in her family. She cared deeply for her nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. She went above and beyond the normal obligations of an aunt or great-aunt with her time, energy, and resources. Rosy was named godmother to over 10 children, and played a special, guiding role for two of her nephews, Charles Riojas (Ada) and Timothy Riojas; and one of her nieces, Genevie Reyes (Paul).
Rosy held a strong passion for her community, serving as an active member of the Mission City chapter for the League of United Latin American Citizen (LULAC). She was a parishioner at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church and a frequent visitor and donor at Christ the King Catholic Church. Rosy loved to dance at family events and gatherings, especially with her father. Rosy had a natural talent for sewing, knitting, and crafting, serving as the go-to source for Halloween costumes, homemade decorations, and clothing alterations for members of her family. Her loved ones were likely to receive such gifts as curtains, aprons, decorative wreaths, and quilts. She enjoyed traveling with her friends and family and attending games for the San Antonio Spurs, Houston Astros, Houston Texans, and Texas Longhorns football. She was most at peace while tending to her flower gardens and watching her dogs, Sadie and Molly.
Rosy’s radiant smile and infectious laugh lit up any room she occupied. She loved hard, cared deeply, and showed her affection through both kind words and substantive actions. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. The void in the lives of her loved ones is vast and can only be managed by the countless, precious memories that Rosy left behind. Memorial visitation will begin at 6:00 pm at Porter Loring Mortuary.
