January 20, 1948-April 23, 2021
Ruben Sotello Gonzales, age 73, passed away surrounded by family on Friday, April 23, 2021, in San Antonio. He was born on January 20, 1948 to his parents, Gonzalo H. and Herminia (Minnie) Sotello Gonzales of Boerne, Texas. Ruben is preceded in death by his parents; son, Ruben Gonzales Jr.; brothers, Lloyd M. Gonzales and David L. Gonzales. He is survived by his son, Michael A. Gonzales and wife, Selma A.; daughter, Laura L. Bagley and husband, David; grandchildren, Michael A. Gonzales Jr., Julian K. and Jove K. Bagley; great-grandson, Michael Asher Gonzales; brother, Tony Gonzales and wife, Mary; sisters, Irene G. Rodriguez and husband, Robert, and Brenda S. Gonzales; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Gonzales and Rose C. Gonzales; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Ruben was the oldest of six children. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy which he enlisted in 1968 during the Vietnam Era. During his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He served his country proudly.
After leaving the Navy, Ruben began his civilian career working for HEB grocery at the company’s warehouse. He took pride in his position. He was a dedicated and loyal (Partner) employee. In 2003, after 31 years with the company, Ruben retired. He built some life-long friendships during his tenure at HEB. One of his favorite events was joining a group of fellow retirees once every few months for a Saturday morning of coffee and breakfast tacos. Due to the pandemic, he had not seen his fellow retirees for several months, and surely missed the conversations had.
Ruben was also a diehard baseball fan and loved the New York Yankees. Once baseball season would begin, his schedule revolved around what time the Yankees were playing. Baseball was in his genes, from a child playing CYO baseball to being a pitcher for his high school baseball team--was even scouted by the MLB--to later in life, coaching his son’s team. He enjoyed a good backyard barbecue and listening to music, watching old westerns and just spending quality time with family. Ruben was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by his family and all who knew him.
