Ruth Helen Kruger Palmer, 93, died March 1, 2013. She was born Sept. 17, 1919, in Williamson Co., TX, near Coupland. She was the 4th of five daughters born to Otto Frederick Kruger and Sophia Bertha Benke Kruger. After graduation from Taylor High School, she went to business school in Austin and worked for approximately 35 years as a bookkeeper, mostly for Cameron Manufacturing Company in San Antonio. On April 10, 1952, she married Martin Daniel Palmer in San Antonio. Ruth was dedicated to her faith and family and devoted most of her life to lovingly raising her children and spoiling her grandchildren. She went the extra mile in everything she did. Even working full-time, Ruth never missed a ball game or piano recital or PTA meeting - any event relating to her children or grandchildren. She was quiet and spunky, compliant and stubborn, combining a quick wit with a dry sense of humor. Ruth welcomed everyone into her home, often inviting them to stay for a meal or coffee and dessert and boy, could she cook! Nothing was ever store-bought, especially cookies, cakes and pies. People always showed up when they knew it was time to eat. She was also an expert seamstress and made all of the clothes she and her daughter wore. A favorite pastime was buying fabric at Frost Bros., Scrivener's or T&T Fabrics. Ruth loved watching sports of all kinds on TV including professional tennis, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Astros, Texas Rangers and - most importantly - Tony Parker and the San Antonio Spurs. In retirement, she took pleasure in her family's move to Hollywood Park where she was active in the Women's Club and Garden Club. Ruth continued to delight in cooking, sewing, crafts, animals (her dog, Annie, and feeding the deer and birds), puzzles (especially the daily Cryptoquip) and dominoes. For more than 20 years, she had a good time at the monthly dinners and "42" games with her Benke cousins in San Antonio. Most important, she was born the year Congress proposed giving women the right to vote, and Ruth never missed an opportunity to exercise her right to vote. In late February, Ruth left her loving smile, twinkling blue eyes and final "I love you" in the hearts and memories of her children and grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters (Bertha Thonig, Alice Sakewitz and Frances Dagerath), and her husband, Dan. She is survived by her daughter Nancy Palmer, son Robert Palmer (wife Julie), granddaughters Kristina Palmer and Jordan Glazener (husband Matthew) [all of San Antonio], sister Carolyn Cornell (husband Arbie) of Coupland, TX, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the Heights Prime Timers Flower Ministry at Alamo Heights United Methodist Church (78209). Visitation is on Wednesday, April 3, from 4:45 p.m. - 7:45 p.m. at Porter Loring North.
