

She received her nursing degree from the old Robert B. Green Hospital in San Antonio. Her husband's medical practice took the family to Gonzales, Texas where they spent the next twenty years raising their family. She was active in the Episcopal Church Women in Gonzales. She was Office Manager for a number of years in her husband's medical practice before becoming First Executive Director of Rural Healthcare Clinic in Gonzales.
In Seattle, Washington she worked for the federal government as a Training Officer for State Health Inspectors. She moved to Dallas and served as Project Officer for the Division of Healthcare Services. She became an avid Mavericks and Cowboy fan for many years. She retired to San Antonio and tried to cheer for the Spurs. She loved sports of all kinds and also enjoyed gardening.
Ruth was devoted to her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her sister and two brothers.
She is survived by her sons, David M. Shelby, Jr. of San Antonio, TX, and Dr. John Shelby and wife Anne of New Albany, IN; grandchildren, Lauren Graham, Stephen Shelby, Hunter Shelby, Carolyn Ross and Andrew Shelby; four great-grandchildren; and sister, Lola Leadbetter.
