He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific. He received his PhD from the University of Texas in Austin in Education. He later retired as a Superintendant of Schools in Duncanville. He was Assistant Chief Appraiser for Dallas County Appraisal District and chairman of the Deacons for First Baptist Church in Duncanville. He was also the President of the Dallas County School Board.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 11 siblings.
Sam is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Ruth S. Thompson; son, Tim Thompson (Loy); daughter, Sammye Ruth Rives (Donald); grandchildren, Chad, Blake Earl, Audra and J.D.; great grandchildren, Rylee, Rydlii, Rykyr, Knox Earl and Knash.
