Lt. Col. Samuel G. Smith U.S. Army Ret passed away Thursday, October 24, 2002. He was born in Bakewell, TN December 11, 1910, one of 11 children of Mary and William Willoughby Smith. He joined the Army at 17 and served in the last horse cavalry in Marfa, TX. Later he served in the Philippines, Chicago, Alaska, Washington State, and California. While stationed at Fort Sam Houston during World War II, he married his beloved wife of 61 years, Emily Burgess Smith, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Smith of San Antonio; sisters, Helen Dudley of Grove City, Ohio, and Ruth Hull of Eleanor, West Virginia, as well as many nieces and nephews.The Rev.
