

Sandra Caffey Falkenberg, 76, died surrounded by loving family on April 4th, 2025, following an autumn 2023 cancer diagnosis. Sandy was the daughter of T.W. and Lucille Caffey. Sandy’s life was defined by her love of family and her love of music. She became a proficient pianist early in life and then played flute in the band at both Austin’s McCallum High School (graduating in ’68) and at the University of Texas Arlington (graduating ’72).
Sandy taught elementary music in the Del Valle School District, Alamo Heights ISD and then for many years at Castle Hills Elementary in San Antonio’s NEISD. Additionally, she sang in church choirs and assisted with children’s music at Christ Lutheran (Odessa), Christ Lutheran (Alamo Heights), St. John’s Lutheran Church and Day School (San Antonio) and Central Christian Day School (San Antonio). Sandy’s latest musical participation was at St. Mark’s Episcopal in downtown San Antonio where she and her husband Ralph were members of the church choir. With the choir, they enjoyed five pilgrimages to the UK, singing at Anglican cathedrals, sharing their love of music internationally.
Sandy was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Tommy Caffey. She is survived by her husband, Ralph Falkenberg; two daughters, Rev. Katie Rode and Anna Freemyer (Jeff); and stepsons Michael Falkenberg (Anna Caswell) and Max Falkenberg; grandchildren, Kaley Leng (Ryu), Jocelyn Freemyer, Cora Freemyer and Alejandro Caridad; and great-grandchildren, Chakara and Kiryu Leng. She is also survived by her sister, Donna Rinn (Reed), many nieces, nephews, and their children, as well as in-laws on both the Caffey and Falkenberg sides of her family. Finally, she is survived by Rev. Steve Rode, the father of her daughters.
A Memorial Service for Sandy will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church at 315 E. Pecan in downtown San Antonio (78215) on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon and time of fellowship will follow in the church’s Gosnell Hall.
