For 81 years, Sandra (Sandi) Lee Johnson Prescher used her artistic talents to make the world more beautiful. Sandra, age 81, of Bryan, Texas, was born in the Brook Army General Hospital at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, on October 21, 1942, to Captain Edward Clay Johnson Jr. and Catherine “Kitty” Johnson.
Sandi’s love for art began at a young age with influences from her mother, a professional artist. She attended San Antonio College after graduating from Alamo Heights High School in 1960.
In 1963, she met 2nd Lieutenant Walter A. Prescher Jr. Sandi loved to tell the story about their first date because Walter’s college roommate, knowing that he needed a date, suggested that his date (Sandi’s sister, JoAnn) bring Sandi along, which led to their introduction. Walter would visit Sandi in San Antonio, growing especially fond of Sandi’s grandmother, Bea. The two married in 1965 at the Fort Sam Houston Chapel.
For the first 20 years of their marriage, they resided at duty stations throughout the United States and Germany, where Walter was stationed. Sandi used these cultural influences, including those of her hometown of San Antonio and the Tole technique acquired in Germany, to create a unique art style specializing in religious works, bringing Bible stories and depictions of saints to life. While residing in San Angelo, she graduated with a Graphic Arts degree. She shared her passion for art by teaching art classes. In addition to being an artist, Sandi lived out her Christian faith by volunteering in church, Emmaus, Army Wives Clubs, and mission trips to Mexico.
Sandi was preceded in death by her parents, Capt. Edward Clay Johnson Jr and Catherine “Kitty'' Johnson, sister JoAnn Rubinstein, and brother-in-law Melvin Prescher.
