

Santiago “Jimmy:” M. Medellin passed away peacefully at home on April 12, 2018. He was 81. He was born at home to Alberto and Margarita Medellin here in San Antonio. He attended Fox Tech High School and graduated in 1955. He began working at Alamo Candy and Vending and would go to different stores throughout the city filling cigarette and candy machines. He met whom was soon to be his wife, Dolores “Lola,” after seeing her working at the Alameda Theatre. He joined the US Army in 1956 and served a combined of 40 years in the US Army and US Army Reserve. His awards and decorations include The Army Commendation Medal (1OCL), The Army Expeditionary Medal, and Commander’s Award for Civilian Service. His assignments include duty in the Canal Zone, Republic of Panama in 1990. Jimmy retired from the US Army in 1996 with the rank of Master Sergeant Jimmy and Lola were married May 1, 1960 on his birthday. They welcomed their only child and daughter Debra in 1961. Jimmy worked hard to provide for his family. He began attending night classes to become a peace officer and was able to apply at the Bexar County Sheriff Department working the graveyard shift as a booking sergeant for 22 Years. After retiring from the Bexar County Sheriff Department, he became involved with the VFW Post 9186. There he served as Quartermaster for the organization. At the time the Post was down to its last eleven thousand dollars. In a matter of five years, he was able to increase the working funds of the organization to close to one hundred thousand. In the years he served as Quartermaster, he never failed an audit. He was made a life member in 1996.
He also became a member of the Memorial Service Detachment (MSD) at Ft. Sam Houston Cemetery in 1995 where he provided Military Honors for our fallen. He participated in more than 5,700 internments with over 8,800 volunteer hours spanning 22 years of dedicated service as a Member of the Wednesday Squad. His last duty day with the MSD was Wednesday July 19, 2017. Since the passing of his wife Lola, he spent time at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) every Tuesday and Thursday. He made friends with everyone. While undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, his friends from JCC always checked on him, especially Isabelle.
In his years here on earth he will be remembered as a generous, loving and honorable man.
He was preceded in death by his sister Olga Hernandez and his wife Lola of 53 years. He is survived by his daughter Debra and Son in Law Robert Beyer. He is also survived by his much-loved pets, Socks, Coco, Bonnie and Russell.

A visitation will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 07, 2018 at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 pm that same evening. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 08, 2018 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Interment to follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
