

Sergio Joe Perez, died peacefully in San Antonio, Texas, on June 30, 2023, with family at his side. Sergio was born and raised in Laredo, Texas on October 13, 1956. In 1974, right after high school he joined the Army, hoping to deploy to Vietnam.
While working at a McDonald’s in Laredo, Texas, Sergio met his wife, Linda and in 1977, they married, a union of 46 years. Sergio served his country as an Army Soldier, for 20 years, achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class. His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Commendation Medal (2nd Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Achievement Medal (2nd Oak Leaf Cluster), Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Development Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Drill Sergeant Badge, and the Expert Infantry Badge. Along this journey, Sergio had the support and love of his wife and their two children.
In 1994, Sergio decided to retire from the United States Army, transitioning to civilian life, Sergio embarked on a second career, first working with Texas Department of Criminal Justice for 5 years and then as a Department of the Army Civilian, serving as the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, Army Support Activity (ASA), Installation Management Command, and U.S. Army North, JBSA-Fort Sam Houston, Texas, from 2008 to 2023. He was instrumental in the execution of Fort Sam Houston’s Sexual Assault Response Program for both Army North and the ASA. His professionalism, instruction, and teamwork were unparalleled.
Always striving to better himself and set an example for his children and peers, he received his Bachelor of Social Work from Tarleton State University in 1999. Be it professionally or privately, Sergio always lived by the Army Values, loving his family, and taking care of people – Sergio was a Soldier for Life.
Sergio also loved to spend time with his family, which meant playing with his four grandsons. During his leisure time, Sergio enjoyed fishing, listening to music and barbecuing, he was a devoted San Antonio Spurs fan, but most of all a huge University of Alabama football fan. He is preceded in death by his father, Joe Perez. Sergio is survived by his wife, Linda, their children, Sergio Jr and Laura, his mother, Ms. Norma Salinas Putman, and his four grandchildren, Elijah, Noah, Isaiah, and Jeremiah.
