Socorro Varela, 95, of San Antonio, TX, passed away peacefully at home on October 8, 2024, after a long fulfilling life. She was born on July 2, 1929. in Mesilla Park, New Mexico to Guadalupe Lopez-Garcia and Victor Aldaba. She was a proud member of the Alicia Trevino Center.
Socorro dedicated her life to maintaining a warm home. She would start every morning making a tall stack of tortillas that would last the whole day. Chorizo, egg and bean tacos in the morning, arroz con leche for an after-school snack and a hearty dinner in the evening. Even in her late years, Socorro enjoyed taking food to the center to share with her friends. Her gift of love was a jar of home-made salsa or nopalitos with pork and chili. They were always a welcome treat by everyone.
Socorro’s memory will forever live in her children in that all of them inherited her love of plants and flowers. She also had a great sense of humor and could also be a prankster. Her friends from the center could probably share several stories about her humor.
She also had a great fondness for her son-in-law, Robert. They would start the day with a cup of coffee before he would see her off on the Via bus. After losing her husband, she felt lost but found camaraderie and friendship at the Alicia Trevino Center, where she would go daily. When the Via bus would take her home, she would be greeted by Robert and his two pets, Penny and Little Bear.
Socorro was a loyal and faithful sister, daughter and wife. She will be reunited in heaven with her parents, Guadalupe and Victor, her siblings, Luz and Josefina, her husband, Jose, her daughter, Rosalba, her sons, Joe Jr., Louie and Lorenzo. She will also be reunited with nephews, nieces, grandchildren and half-siblings.
Socorro is survived by her son Robert Barela from Las Cruces, NM; daughter Vera Ortiz from Carlsbad, NM; Hipolitalisia Gutierrez from Dexter, NM, Lilly Varela also from New Mexico and Guadalupe Sanchez from San Antonio, TX.
