Steve was a great friend and he introduced me to falconry. I was just remembering a visit to Texas and thought I would upload this photo.

I was so sad to hear of Steve's passing. We lost touch after high school. however, after reading the tributes of those who knew Steve later in life - nothing changed. Kind, smart, sweet, and compassionate were always hallmarks of Steve. Middle school science fair was an exciting car ride with Steve's bees in the car! It is so fitting that he became a vet.  As we all headed to colleges Steve headed to the" University of the South" which seemed like a perfect fit for a true gentleman and gentle soul. Steve will always hold a special place in my heart. Sending my deepest sympathy to Mary, the family, and countless friends who were lucky to cross Steve's path. Our dear friend died much too soon but left a wake of goodness in the world.

Steve was my dear, dear student at Sewanee in the 70s.  He was my lab assistant in Microbiology and was a pre vet under my care there.  I have stayed in touch with him until several years ago.  He was a kind, gentle soul and will be missed by all who knew him.  My best wishes to the family as they deal with his death.  Henrietta Croom

To know Steve was to understand his compassion and love for all creatures on Earth. His heart knew no bounds of understanding forgiveness and acceptance tendered with the gentleness of a lamb and the strength of a lion. His boundless friendship to every soul was the essence of Steve. I never saw Steve raise his voice or his hand in anger or malice. Many times his veterinarian services were free to those who could not pay. He offered his help to friends willingly and often. His heart was always open to anyone and every creature that needed comfort. In love and life Steve was the first to bend, the last to break, and the one who carried the load. No one that Steve touched did not benefit was his deep friendship and love. He was the most of what God intended mankind to be. Over the years as our friendship became brotherhood Steve knew my secrets and I knew his. I knew where his heart was broken, his feelings were scarred, and his love was growing. He knew the same about me. He helped me as he had done with countless others. And, he allowed me to help him.
That was his grace and he understood that more than most. When life hurt him beyond measure he did not run, but, rather opened his heart for healing, and, in that he showed us how to live. When you lose someone that knows everything about you, you lose years of understanding and precious moments of remembrance, I trust we all know this about Steve. He knew many things about many people and kept them all in his compassionate heart. He is neither replaceable nor forgettable in my life. From tears to never ending laughter he is and will forever be in our lives and thoughts. I will talk with him and laugh with him for the rest of my life because the friendship we shared was beyond time and place. True friends and brothers teach each other and learn from each other and love each other. Steve and I shared this bond and it is timeless. Many others know this about Steve and understand the loss we all feel.

Steve was a dear friend for a large part of my life starting when he had a veterinarian practice in the Dallas area. He was without a doubt the kindest, most sensitive, compassionate, and loving person I’ve ever known. We first became friends as members of St. Thomas Episcopal Church here in Dallas where he started a lay ministry program used by many churches for counseling  members in need of emotional help and guidance (quiet coincidentally called Stephen’s Ministry). 
 As a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, he was a beloved professional caring for and loving all animals.  He was deeply in tune with people and nature. 
Friends and I always enjoyed having Steve around  to brighten our spirits and share in life’s happy (and sad) moments.   He will be sorely missed, but surely resting in the hands of our Lord in heaven!

Catherine and Rodney Gillespie and Lily Cude got to know Steve through our love of bees.  We were beginning beekeepers and Steve invited us to his place to show us his bees and answer our numerous questions about beekeeping,  Steve was kind, funny, and very excited about talking about the bees, his falcons, his chickens and his garden.  He seemed to have great enthusiasm for all of these living creatures under his care.  When it came time for our first honey harvest, Steve gladly lent us his equipment.  He loved to teach us about bees and their care.  He became  our mentor and friend.

Catherine and Rodney Gillespie and our granddaughter Lily Cude got to know Steve late in his life through bee keeping.   We visited his home at Canyon to look at his bees, and to ask him a million questions about bees, as we were just starting out. Steve answered every question.  He was kind, funny and very friendly. He loved sharing his knowledge of bee keeping, as it can be a complex endeavor. He became our teacher and friend. When it came time for our first honey harvest, he lent us his equipment, as it can also be an expensive undertaking.  That was the last time we saw him.  We will always remember his smile and kindness.

Bubba, I am truly saddened by Steve’s death. I know what he meant to you. I also know from experience how painful it is to lose a child. You have lived through this too many times, and it’s not fair. But Steve is now soaring with the falcons he loved. I am praying for you. Rusty
