Stew, as he was affectionately known, was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His journey on this earth was marked by love, compassion, and unwavering faith in God. His quick wit and humor made us laugh and brought joy to every gathering. His passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
Stew lived a life defined by kindness, integrity, and generosity. His love of reading carried him on countless adventures, and he delighted in sharing those stories and discoveries with his family and friends. He also found joy and comfort in classic western movies, drawn to their spirit of courage and loyalty. Giving came naturally to him—throughout his life, he quietly supported charitable causes that reflected his deep compassion for others and his desire to make the world a better place.
A proud Vietnam veteran, Stew served his country with honor and courage. During his service, he made a remarkable discovery—one that was later featured in the Los Angeles Times article titled “Officer’s unit discovered enemy tunnels in Vietnam” (March 17, 2008):
“It wasn’t until Sgt. Stewart L. Green sat on a nail, which turned out to be attached to a wooden trap door perforated with air holes, that an ingeniously camouflaged tunnel entrance was found. Green, a wiry 130-pound soldier, dropped into the tunnel and reported spotting 30 Viet Cong hiding just feet below the U.S. troops. … Haldane ordered red smoke grenades dropped … nonlethal riot control gas … Green reentered the tunnel … placed explosive charges …”
This act of bravery became a lasting testament to Stew’s courage, curiosity, and dedication to his fellow soldiers.
He was devoted to his family and loved taking on the role of father and grandfather. He was predeceased by his parents, Leroy Greene and Essie May Wheeler. He is survived by Grace, Hector, Giana, Alianna, Bianca, Ramona, Pixie, and Leon, along with many other beloved family members and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered with love.
