Susan was born on July 5, 1949 in Isle of Palms, South Carolina. That was the first residence of many, as her father, Captain David Cummins, was a career Naval officer. Her travels led her to Cuba, Rhode Island, California, Hawaii and Virginia. She graduated from Woodson High School in Fairfax, Virginia in 1967. After graduation she secured a position at the Center for Naval Analyses, where she met her future husband, Albert Slagle Allbritton.
Susan and Slagle were married in 1972. In 1975 she began her most important career, the full-time job of raising two wonderful sons, Tyler and Blake.
When not spending time with her family, Susan acquired two new passions: quilting and party bridge. Hours upon hours were spent producing beautiful handmade quilts and crafts that exhibited her creative skills. She truly loved bridge. If there was a game to be found, she was ready to play. Even Covid could not stop her. She and close friends learned that the internet was an avenue for countless hours of contract bridge pleasure, plus not having to do any card shuffling.
After retiring to Texas in 2006, Susan and Slagle began a new adventure - ocean cruising. Their first cruise was a repositioning cruise to Rome and they never looked back, with more than 200 days of sailing. Susan did not even care if the ship hit port. She loved to simply gaze at the beauty of the open seas. Unfortunately, Covid cancelled two years of planned cruises. But there were many fond memories of those taken.
Susan is survived by her husband of over 50 years, Albert Slagle Allbritton, son Tyler Austin Allbritton (and wife Jen and sons Tate and Chase), son Blake Andrew Allbritton (and wife Sarah), sister Dorothy Cummins Schmitendorf and brother, David “Speed” Cummins. Susan’s place of remembrance will be the Neptune Memorial Reef off the coast of Florida. There she will rest, until Jesus returns, near her mother, Glenn Philbrook Cummins, and, one day, her husband.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Susan will be held October 27, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Currey Creek Church in the Stone Chapel, 35 Cascade Cavern, Boerne, TX 78015. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared below for Susan and The Allbritton Family.
