She was born three months premature in the height of Spring on May 4, 1946 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Though this was the beginning of a life filled with physical challenges it could not stop Susan’s humor, talent and brilliant mind. As a child growing up in San Antonio, she was regularly described as the sweetest girl in school. She had an unforgettable smile, which was known by everyone who experienced the great delight of making it appear. If you took the time to know her you would understand Susie was deeply patient, generous of spirit and highly intelligent with a great sense of humor.
She loved the theater and was a talented performer. She loved the Spurs but was too petite to play basketball. Susan - or Toodie as her grandfather called her - attended Longfellow and Jefferson and studied at Mount Greeley College at the University of North Colorado. Here is where her life’s path opened to her when she decided to become a teacher with a focus in Special Education. She went on to get her Masters at Our Lady of the Lake and to be a dedicated educator. She taught for over 30 years starting in Uvalde ISD, then Bexar County/Sunshine Cottage for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Edgewood ISD. A whole room in her house was dedicated to the school supplies she would often purchase herself.
She was a beloved teacher, deeply cherished aunt, cousin and sister whose life had more impact on those around her than she was even aware. For she once suffered a great heartbreak and loss from which she never fully recovered, and it left Susan with a gentleness and humility that one could feel in her presence.
She is survived by her over-protective sister Margaret, dedicated nieces Arianna and Margot, loving nephew Xavier and dear cousins, grand nieces and nephew. We love her so and will miss her something awful but are also happy she is in the arms of God and free as a butterfly of Spring.
