'Uncle Tommy' will also be greatly missed by 14 nieces and nephews, as well as many other family members and good friends.
Thomas fought a long and horrible battle with bone-cancer, receiving his terminal diagnosis in October, 2018. At that time, he had less than 6 months to live. However, Thomas was anything but a quitter and he volunteered to undergo any and every surgery and clinical trial he could find anywhere in the world.
Osteosarcoma is a pediatric cancer that sometimes strikes young adults. By acting as a 'guinea pig', he was hoping that maybe his suffering (from previously unknown and sometimes brutal side-effects) would result in helping not only himself, but also the thousands of future children stricken yearly by this deadly diagnosis.
Thomas was one of those hero's you never hear about. The ones who do their best work when no one is watching. One day, when they announce the eradication of childhood cancer, let your mind drift back to the many who courageously sacrificed their comfort and well-being daily to do their part in the relentless quest for the elusive yet inevitable cure.
Even after he lost his entire lower right leg, Thomas never let his diagnosis slow him down. He always just moved forward as if everything was just fine. And, amazingly, it nearly always was.
Thomas loved to travel. Whether going to Hawaii, or to the next town over, Thomas and Al were always on the move. They did their best to explore everything they could think of. They crammed about 20 years-worth of travel into 6 years.
Now, the world will never be the same.
