

Thomas Joseph Doran, 87, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2025. Born on February 20, 1938, in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to Olive and Thomas A. Doran, Tom grew up surrounded by family and community. He was preceded in death by his three older siblings, Edith, Raymond, and John.
Tom married his childhood friend and the love of his life, Rhoda (Benson) Doran, in 1963. Together they shared 62 wonderful years of marriage, raising two daughters, Sharon and Jenny, and building a life centered on love, laughter, and family. Tom was endlessly proud of his wife, children, and grandchildren.
As a boy, Tom was active in the Boy Scouts and developed a lifelong love of camping. In high school, he was active in basketball and baseball. He also developed a love for archery, and in 1956 he became the Rhode Island State Archery Champion at the age of 18. After graduating from Central Falls High School, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, completing tours in Taiwan, Panama, and South Korea. Tom retired after 20 years as a dental technician, is remembered not only for his service, but also for organizing team baseball games and annual family picnics that brought joy to his fellow servicemen and their families. Following his military career, Tom earned an associates degree in Sociology from San Antonio College. He later discovered his passion for golf and became an avid player, winning several golf tournaments. A devoted sports fan, Tom enjoyed hockey, basketball (Celtics fan), football (Giants fan) and baseball, where his heart belonged to the Boston Red Sox, whom he always cheered for faithfully throughout his life. Tom was a proud member of the American Legion and VFW. He joined the Fraternal Order of Eagles in 2005, where he remained active in charitable fundraising. In 2010, he became a season ticket holder for the San Antonio Rampage hockey team and rarely missed a game.
Beyond his accomplishments and passions, Tom was a gifted artist and singer. He could draw and paint with ease, and his smooth, crooner’s voice filled many gatherings with beautiful music. Known for his humor, warmth, and generosity, Tom was truly the life of the party and beloved by all who knew him.
Tom is survived by his devoted wife, Rhoda; his daughters Sharon Ballenger (Kevin) and Jenny Uriegas (Sonny); and his cherished grandchildren Ryan, Sean, Lauren, and Allyn.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and service that will be carried on by his family and all whose lives he touched. He will be dearly missed.
A memorial service will be on Monday, October 20, 2025 at 9:00AM at Trevino Funeral Home, 2525 Palo Alto Rd. San Antonio TX 78211 with military honors to follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd. San Antonio TX 78209.
