It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Thomas (Tom) Patrick Rhodes, a devoted husband and father, loyal friend, avid golfer and passionate dog lover, who sadly left us on October 7, 2024.
Born on September 21, 1948, Tom was a beacon of love and support to his family. Tom and his beloved wife Ellen shared many adventures traveling the world, sailing and golfing, and enjoying time with friends and family. Tom was a mentor and guide to his two sons Christopher and Justin. He cherished every moment spent with them, instilling in them the values of kindness, integrity, perseverance and commitment. His unwavering pride in their accomplishments was evident to all who knew him. Family gatherings were a highlight of his life, and he found immense joy in celebrating milestones and creating treasured memories with his loved ones.
In addition to his role as a father, Tom was a man of many passions. He had a profound appreciation for intellectual pursuits and found joy in the challenge of golf, where he spent countless hours perfecting his swing alongside his friends. Whether it was a friendly game or a spirited competition, his love for golf brought together both old friends and new, creating lasting bonds.
Tom had an infectious spirit and a kind heart that touched the lives of everyone he met. He was known for his unparalleled sense of humor and an endless supply of imprudent jokes that could lighten any mood, from puns that made you groan to one-liners that caught you off guard. His playful spirit, light-hearted laughter and wisdom will be dearly missed by his friends and family alike.
Tom also held a special place in his heart for dogs, often referred to as “the man with the dog treats,” by his fellow dog park devotees, two- and four-legged alike. His days were brightened by the companionship of his dogs – Niko, Mimi, Sassy, Lola, Koko, Buster and Daisy – who were as much a part of the family as any human.
Professionally, Tom was a corporate lawyer who spent many years in the aerospace industry, where he retired as Vice President, General Counsel of Lockheed Martin, Western Development Laboratories. Tom was always proud of his service to his country and was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps as a Captain serving in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps.
Tom is survived by his wife Ellen, sons Christopher and Justin, daughters-in-laws Karla and Nicole, granddaughters Mila and Olivia – who were fortunate enough to meet him before his passing – his brothers David and John and sister Ann, as well as countless friends and family whose lives were touched by his kindness, humor, love and wisdom. He leaves behind a legacy of love, friendship, and unforgettable memories that will forever resonate in the lives he influenced.
The family will hold a celebration of his life on October 26, 2024, at Immaculate Conception Church, in Fayetteville, New York, where all who knew and loved him are invited to share their memories and honor his incredible journey.
Tom was a supporter of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the hospital.
