Thomas Lloyd Thomas passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 9, 2025, after an 11-year battle with cancer—a fight he faced with grit, humor, and just the right amount of stubbornness. According to his mother, he was named after the Welsh singer Thomas Llyfnwy Thomas; according to his father, it was because he was born with a uniquely shaped head. As usual, the truth was probably somewhere in between. He left this world the way he lived in it: on his own terms, surrounded by love, and probably wondering why everyone was making such a fuss.
Born in East Chicago and raised in Hammond, Indiana, Tom served proudly in the U.S. Marine Corps, spending a grand total of 30 action-packed days in Vietnam before being shot and sent home with a Purple Heart and one heck of a story.
After his service, Tom went on to have a successful career in sales with Xerox, where he built lifelong friendships and achieved more than he ever bothered to brag about. His job took him across the country, eventually landing him in San Antonio, Texas, where—lucky for both of them—he met his wife, Becky. Together, they created a life full of laughter, love, and countless adventures. During his final years, Becky was his rock, showing endless care, love, and dedication as his primary caretaker. She made sure he was surrounded by comfort and support through it all, and for that, Tom was beyond grateful.
Tom never passed up a chance to do something exciting. Whether it was a Corvette cruise (always with a disregard for the speed limit), a boat ride around the lake, or taking a jetski out just a little too fast, he was always up for an adventure. He ziplined in Vegas, transformed his backyard into a peaceful oasis that everyone admired, and once even taught disabled skiers and competed in the 1990 World Disabled Ski Championships in Winter Park, Colorado, proudly representing the United States on an international stage. In his neighborhood, he was well recognized as the guy zooming by on his Alley chair with his dachshund, Coco, on his lap. Whether it was embracing a challenge or diving into a new project, Tom was always ready. His love for dogs was unmatched, and over the years, he shared his life with many loyal companions that all surely welcomed him at the rainbow bridge (puppy party).
He was sharp, opinionated, hilarious, and often inappropriate—in all the best ways. He always had a comment for everything, a solution for most things, and no time for nonsense. You always knew where Tom stood, and if he liked you, you were in for life.
Tom is survived by his wife Becky Thomas; stepson Stephen Pence; stepdaughter Becca Miears; sisters Diane Smith, Gail Armstrong, and Kim Thomas; and nieces Danielle Fouladi and Nicole Rachoy, all of whom he was incredibly proud and held close to his heart.
He is now reunited with his parents, Glynn and Lorraine Thomas, who no doubt greeted him with loving arms.
In Tom’s honor, light a cigar, raise a shot of Tuaca (his favorite), and do something funny and a little off-script. That’s how he lived—and that’s how he’d want to be remembered. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to Morgan’s or your favorite non-profit. Our sincere thanks to all his physicians and his caregiver, Amy Gonzalez.
A gathering of family & friends for Thomas will be held Friday, June 27, 2025 from 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM at Sunset North Funeral Home, 910 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, Texas 78232 with celebration of life starting at 12:00 PM.
