Tomasita “Tommie” Perez, a beloved mother, grandmother, and matriarch, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2026. Born on December 21, 1934, she was a pioneer in her family and community—one of the first Hispanic graduates of South San High School, and the first in both her maternal and paternal families to achieve this milestone.
Tommie had a deep love for life and family. She could often be found on the porch listening to the radio, tending her cherished plants, or enjoying daytime television. Her little chihuahua, Baby, was her constant companion, and she always brought warmth and joy to those around her. She delighted in cooking and baking for her family, singing in church, and participating in nearly every family gathering, embodying the true spirit of togetherness. Her daughters affectionately called her “TGIF”—Tomasita Garcia is Fascinating—a nickname that captured her charm, humor, and captivating presence.
A devoted educator, Tommie worked as a teacher’s aide for both regular and special needs students and also served as a lunch lady at St. Joseph School. She cherished memories of going to the movies with her parents and carried a lifelong love of learning and community wherever she went. Fluent in both English and Spanish, she inspired those around her with her wisdom, patience, and unwavering support.
Tommie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Lino Perez; her parents, Alberto and Felicitas Garcia; and her brother, Jose Luis Garcia. She is survived by her sisters, Corina Herrera, Delia Cortez and Margaret Ramos. Her children, Henry Albert and Elena Perez, James Edward and Yolanda Perez, Hope Bernadette and Valentin Martinez, and Rena Lourdes and Leodegario Perez; 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was truly a pillar of her family, whose love and guidance will continue to resonate for generations.
