

TSGT Larry William Unger fought the good fight until October 10th, 2015 when he peacefully passed away at the age of 66 in San Antonio, TX.
Larry was born July 26th, 1949 in Chicago, Illinois to the late George Fisher and Mayten Unger Fisher. He was the eldest child born to this union.
Larry received his education in the Chicago Public School system graduating from Edward Tilden Technical High School in 1966. Here, he was an active member of the ROTC program giving him the start to his military career. After high school, Larry joined the United States Air Force attending basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX and Tech training at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, TX. Larry served as Tactical Aircraft Maintenance Technician (Crew Chief), Drug/Alcohol Abuse Control Counselor and a Weather Specialist. Larry is a veteran of the Vietnam War were he served as the Crew Chief maintaining helicopters and all sizes of aircraft.
Larry was awarded the following: AF Commendation Medal, AF Good Conduct Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, AF Longevity Service Award Ribbon with three Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Stars, AF Outstanding Unit Award, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry with Palm and the AF Presidential Unit Citation with one Oak Leaf Cluster.
Larry’s first duty station was to Howard AFB in the former Canal Zone in Panama City, Republic of Panama. It is during this tour that he met and later married Sherrill Ruth Molyneux. To this union, four children were born: Karen Denise, William Ray, Keisha Jeaneen and Kimberly L’Shawne. Larry was a hands on parent filling his children with love and laughter. Larry possessed a contagiously outgoing spirit and was loved by all that met him. He was an avid Chicago Bears fan loving to watch them play. His favorite singer was James Brown and his favorite musical hit being James Brown’s “Please, Please, Please”.
Larry was very talented enjoying many hobbies including but not limited to photography, scrapbooking, airplane model building, jewelry making using precious stones and counseling. He was active in the community serving as the President of the Black Involvement and Culture Awareness Society on Kelly AFB and Laughlin AFB. In this role, he and his friends would investigate and work to resolve racial issues experienced by black Airmen and women.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mayten Fisher. He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife, Sherrill, children, Karen (William) Taylor, William (Leticia) Unger, Keisha Unger, Kimberly Unger, ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, his brother, Everett (Elaine) Fisher, sisters, Marsha Fisher Evans, Patricia Fisher Jackson, Sallie Steele and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, his good friends Joe Sanders, Willie Chestnut, John Ross, and many others.
Services will be held Tuesday, October 20th at 9:00am at Sunset Funeral Home with the interment following the services at Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX.
