Our sympathy and condolences to Elizabeth and the Carwile family for the loss of this good man and great friend. Ernie was always such a wonderful person to be around with his humor and kindness to everyone all the time. We mourn with you in the loss of your husband, father and a true friend who served his country and fellow man very well throughout his life.

Colonel Ernie Carwile was an important part of my life as he was in the life of all those he touched. I wanted to share with you how I knew him. I worked for him 40 years ago when he was the Base Commander at Carswell AFB in Ft Worth. I was a young Air Force Captain and the youngest Squadron Commander in SAC at the time. Because I was such a young officer and inexperienced, there was of course the opportunity to fail in my new Squadron Commander position. Colonel Carwile was committed to my success as he was all under his Command. He provided me leadership, guidance and support during our association which went on to serve me extremely well over the years in the Air Force and in my personal life. After my command at Carswell, I left for Vietnam. That was 1971. I think he retired soon after that, and I lost track of him. We are now retired in San Antonio and by chance I saw the notice of his death in the Express News yesterday----40 years later. I am sad that I did not know that he was right here in San Antonio so we could re-aquaint and he could see that he did a pretty good job of helping raise the young Captain. Equally, I am happy that I can share in the celebration of his life which clearly was a fruitful one for all who knew him. It was interesting reading about his time on Tinian and also his association with General LeMay. Years later after my Carswell assignment, I was the Aide de Camp to a senior Air Force General, and we visited Tinian (for an official ceremony) at what is left of the runway and bomb pits. Oddly, I walked the exact same ground on Tinian in the middle of the Pacific that Colonel Carwile had decades ago. Later in my Air Force life I had the honor to meeth General LeMay after he retired. We were given the "opportunity" to divert our KC 135 to take him home from Offutt AFB to March AFB after he had been invited to a SAC Headquarters ceremony. I got to spend time with him and can see in retrospect why Colonel Carwile enjoyed and thought so highly of him. One of my favorite quotes in life is "The best use of a person's life is to spend it for something that will outlast it." Clearly by any measurement, Colonel Carwile touched many in his life, making each of us better for the experience and we multiply that in our lives as we go forward. Godspeed Colonel Ernie Carwile

Uncle Dean has always been larger than life to me. My great uncle was so special to me as I have no "first" aunts or uncles. As a little girl, I remember he always greeted my sister and I with a huge hug that always lifted us off the ground. Seemed like he could lift us up to the sky,,,,we thought he was a "giant". He told the best stories and we always listened to every word about the places he and Aunt Neoma had lived or the interesting people they knew. As a teenager, we spent time at many family gatherings at their home in Dallas. It was always so much fun to be around them and listen to their adventures. Uncle Dean has been a part of all our milestones of graduations,weddings, births of our children, hurts, illness and deaths. He taught me the importance of loving our country and serving others. He was a great witness of his faith and a wonderful caretaker of my Mother, my grandmother, my sister and me. I am blessed to be his great niece. I love him and he will be remembered forever in our hearts and in the wonderful stories we tell about him. Love, PAM
