Valdemar S. Mascorro passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of June 3, 2019. Having blessed us with his presence for 93 years, his final gift was to be with family in his own home, and join his beautiful wife Betty, surrounded by his four children; son Robert ("Skip"), daughters Jo Mascorro, Susan McDonald and Lori Ripley. He is preceded in death by his dear wife of 68 years, Betty Marie Dooley Mascorro, parents Jose B. and Ofelia Mascorro, brothers Jose Angel and Robert and sisters Viola and Maria Elma.
Born in Kingsville,Texas Val came from a bountiful family of siblings and is survived by brothers Armando and Joe, sisters Ofelia, Eladia, Fifi, and Maggie. In addition to four children Val and Betty together shared 8 adoring grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Val served his country in Europe during World War II. A Corporal in the 9th Army 381st Combat Engineer Battalion, he was awarded recognition for participation during the Rhine and Rhur Valley River Campaign as well as part of the Occupational Forces in Germany immediately following the war's end. In the final months of service Val was stationed at Ft. Hunt, Virginia along the Potomac River near George Washington's plantation home of Mount Vernon. An installation that discreetly interred high value, low security risk assets such as German scientists; these same individuals would eventually make monumental contributions that would put America into outer space and onto the moon. On weekends he would be charged with escorting prisoner "trustees" for recreational horseback rides along the Potomac. It was on one such outing that he would meet his future wife, Betty Marie Dooley, while stopping into her mother's small country store to buy soda pop for his "prisoners".
After the war, Valdemar enrolled in Cohen Electrical School in Chicago to learn the trade of electrician. From Virginia, Val and Betty would move with their infant son to San Antonio, Texas where the family grew with the addition of three daughters. Eventually he would become a Master Electrician and start his own business, Val Electric Company.
For many years, Val and his family were active members in St. Benedict's parish and parochial school. In later years, they continued their church involvement at St. Pius X Parish.
With the loss of his wife Betty, February 5th, 2015, a team of loving and dedicated women would join the family for Val's day to day care. The family wishes to express special appreciation to Isella “Shirley” Briseno, Veronica “Runie” Jimenez, Dixie Blythe, Ashley Garcia, Rosie Rodriguez and Hallie Saylor, as well as numerous others who contributed their time and devotion while assisting Val in his daily activities. We’d also like to express our gratitude to Heart to Heart Hospice staff for their care and comfort for Val and family in the final days of his amazing life journey.
His wit and sense of humor, kindness and loving heart, will truly be missed. In lieu of flowers please consider your expressions of love to be made in the way of contribution to Heart to Heart Hospice Foundation, an organization that assists in covering funeral expenses for those who are unable to provide a dignified burial for their loved ones following hospice care, and/or assisting those who may be just beginning life, through the efforts of the Children's Hospital of San Antonio, (part of the Children's Miracle Network of hospitals).
