Valerie was born in Lubbock, Texas on May 20, 1937; the first of four children born to David Park Martin and Mary Elizabeth (Deaver) Martin. She lived in San Antonio, Texas from the time she was eight years old until her passing. Valerie was a graduate of Edison High School in 1955 and attended Trinity University in 1956. Valerie was married to Hugh C. Bailey for 36 years. She had two daughters, one son, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Valerie was on staff at Castle Hills First Baptist Church for thirty-two years. She started as a secretary, but for most of that time she served as the Media Director, staff writer, and book editor. When she retired, she started her own desktop publishing company where she edited and published numerous books. Her mother instilled in her a love of literature, especially poetry, which she began writing at an early age. God blessed her with a gift for words and she used it to bring glory and honor to Him.
Valerie was active in local, state, and national poetry groups serving as an officer, sponsoring and judging contests, editing anthologies, and writing newsletters. She published two books of her own inspirational poetry and won numerous awards and accolades with her writing.
Valerie loved Jesus and loved sharing her testimony through her writing. We rejoice in knowing that she is in the very presence of God now. We know that one day we will be reunited with her in heaven. We thank her for her tireless prayers on our behalf.
She was preceded in death by her husband Hugh Bailey, son Ben Bailey, grandson Steve Lucas, parents David and Mary Martin, sisters Sharon Turner and Mary Greenwell, and brother David Martin, Jr.
