

When Velma was 15 years old, she traveled to Victoria to compete in the district interscholastic tennis competition and placed first. Velma moved to San Antonio as a teenager to begin her working career.
For many years she attended school at night while working during the day and earned an accounting degree from St. Mary's University.
Velma had a long career working for numerous San Antonio companies, and in 1968 she took part in HemisFair by working at the Woman's Pavilion.
While working at a San Antonio laboratory company, Velma met Basil H. Taylor, and they were married in 1948. Basil and Velma had a long and enjoyable hobby training dogs in obedience, showing dogs, and instructing dog training classes.
They traveled the country with as many as three dogs at a time to attend dog shows and see the sites. She was an active person who liked to experience new things.
Velma liked sports and attending concerts and other events in San Antonio. In recent years, she enjoyed playing dominoes, mahjong, and bunko with her friends.
Velma often took adult education classes and especially enjoyed classes in history and politics.
She was preceded in death by her spouse of 57 years, Basil H. Taylor who passed away in 2005.
Velma is survived by a sister, Blanche Williamson and husband, Jay of Houston; two brothers, Glen Dworaczyk and wife, Rita of San Antonio and Eugene Dworaczyk and wife, Irene of Hobson; numerous nieces and nephews; and many great nieces and great nephews.
Velma never hesitated to help those in need - both family and friends - and many benefited from her kindness and generosity.
She will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Porter Loring.
