Vera Juanita Fields Jones, 97, known and loved throughout her life as Wanita and then Granny, passed away Mothers Day, May 8, 2022. She lived a long, full life loving a husband, three children, and many, many, many other family and friendsoh, yeah, and Hersheys Kisses!
Wanita was born on November 11, 1924, in Farwell, a small town in the Texas Panhandle, but grew up in Harlingen, Texas. She married Wayne Jones, an older brother of her high school BFF, on January 27, 1945. Wanita and Wayne eventually settled in El Paso, Texas. There Wanita was a homemaker and then a mother when Anita Louise and Alan were born. A few years later, Wanita and Wayne moved to Longview, Texas and Earle was born. This family of five settled in Corpus Christi, Texas, the Sparkling City by the Sea that was so adored by Wanita. It was in Corpus Christi that a grandson and great grandchildren were born.
As empty-nesters, Wanita and Wayne moved to the Texas Hill Country following Waynes passion to be a Church of Christ minister. After Waynes death in 1988, Wanita became a cornerstone in the Fredericksburg CofC Widow Ladies Club. She and the other Widow Ladies cooked and cared for those in need. In 1996 she retired to a quieter life, first in Wharton, Texas and then La Porte, Texas to be nearer her daughter and son-in-law in Houston and closer to her beloved Texas Gulf Coast. Thus began 20+ years of joyful Sunday drives exploring Texas coastlines, rivers and surrounding countryside, enjoying the floral, the fauna and the food! Many New England crabcakes, Gulf Coast shrimp and Tex-Mex tacos were consumed as Mother and Daughter toured Coastal Texas.
Wanita ended her journey in memory care at The Heritage of Meyerland, where she enjoyed enormous amounts of love and compassionate care during the last 2 years of her life. Dancing to the end, Granny charmed us all. While our hearts are broken, its a simple price to pay to have had this beautiful soul in our lives and in our memories.
Wanita will be reunited with her beloved Wayne at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas on May 27, 2022.
