

Vertie Bell Barnes was born in Marion, MS on July 8, 1925 to Thomas and Almeta Abrams and entered eternity on September 11, 2015 in San Antonio, TX. Vertie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and a devout Christian. She was a member of the NCO Wives Club, an avid ceramic maker, seamstress and a Girl Scout Leader. Vertie also loved to fish. She was preceded in death by her husband, Artis Barnes, Sr.; parents; sisters, Martha Mae Baxter, Ora King, Julia Nell Fortenberry, brother, James Abram; brother-in-law, Jimmy Lee Taft; and her granddaughter, Christine Michelle Barnes. Surviving are her son, Artis Barnes, II (Patricia); daughter, Verdell Griffin (Nathaniel, Jr.); granddaughter, Monique Hardy; and grandson, Jason Barnes.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday September 16, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2015 in the Chapel at Sunset Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. The family would like to express their gratitude to Elmcroft Assisted Living and Tiki Wingfield and Gentiva Hospice and Rosa for the loving care shown to Vertie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Cancer Society.
