Virginia (Ginny) Spencer Halter, age 102, passed away on Wednesday May 28, 2025. She was the 2nd of 5 children born on March 3, 1923 to John Hutchings Spencer and Loughborough Magee. She grew up in San Antonio after being born in Asherton, Tx. She graduated from Jefferson High School where she was a Lasso who performed when Alamo Stadium first opened in September, 1940. After attending Incarnate Word College, she worked for the Federal Reserve Bank for 10 years. She was married to Guy Simpson Halter for 64 years. Their one daughter, Mary Virginia Halter, died in 2008. They loved to travel, play games, take daily walks and visit with many friends and family. They were very active at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church where Ginny was once a Coordinator of the famous Lenten Luncheons. In later years she and Guy would deliver flowers for 12 years to shut-in members. Ginny was a favorite aunt to all her nieces and nephews who traveled with her and Uncle Guy and were frequently entertained by board games and grilled cheese sandwiches.
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Mary Virginia, brothers John H. Spencer, Jr. and Robert H. Spencer, and sisters, Mary Spencer Yates and Josephine Spencer Hill. She is survived by many nephews and nieces: Richard F. Halter, Dr. Jack C. Halter, Grant W. Halter, Dr. William S. Yates, Mary Catherine Higgins, Anne Spencer Holm, Herbert W. Hill, Jr., Harriet Spencer Baltus, Sarah Hill Ferguson, and Rev. John S. Hill in addition to many great nieces and great nephews.
After her husband died, Ginny later moved for 3 years to the Franklin Park Alamo Heights Assisted Living Home. She quickly became known as “the Dancing Queen” due to her lively interactions with other residents during the weekly music hour. She once explained that she wanted to “make other people happy”. In addition to the caring and supportive Franklin Park staff, she was very blessed by her private caretakers for the past 3 years who have been so faithful, attentive, and supportive of her personal and physical needs: Maria Segovia, Mary Contreras, Teresa Montemayor, and Manuela Lynton. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the charity of your choice or to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.
A Celebration of Life for Ginny will be held Wednesday, June 4, 2025 at 11:00 AM at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 315 E Pecan St, San Antonio, Texas 78205.
