Virginia Lee Lockhart, age 94, passed away on Thursday, September 7, 2023 in San Antonio, Texas. She was born on March 24, 1929 in Ralls, Texas to Virgie Hill and Harold Holmes Rumph. Her early years were spent in the Texas Panhandle during the Dust Bowl. At the age of 15, after the death of her father, she and her family moved from Dallas to the community of Okra, Texas to live near her grandparents. In 1946, upon her graduation from Rising Star High School, she married her husband, Giles Harold Lockhart. The births of her son and 3 daughters followed. In 1957, after moving to Austin, she and her husband opened G.H. Lockhart Sheet Metal Co. which they owned and operated for over 35 years. Our mother instilled a love of reading and a love of music to us. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed traveling whenever she could but her passion was bridge. Unfortunately, she was never able to instill this passion in any of her children but instead, “Dede” taught her grandchildren spades and then took great delight in defeating them.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 60 years, Giles; son, Harold (Tony); and sisters, Dorothy Rogers and Eloise Smith.
Virginia is survived by her daughters, Regina Robinson (Bill), Sherita Meno (Mike), Vicki Schwierking (Ron), daughter-in-law, Yvonne; grandchildren, Sara Robinson Holliday (Justin), Luke Robinson, Gina Meno Dobeus (Jim), Captain Michael Meno U.S. Navy (Pauline), Chris Meno (Kelli), Elizabeth Lockhart Dietrich (Chuck), James Lockhart (Alana), Todd McCutcheon (Christy), Andrea McCutcheon, Courtney Lockhart Adair (Kenny), Cole Lockhart, Charles Killough (Sheena), Ryan Killough, Jake Schwierking (Chelsea); over 25 great-grandchildren; and her brother, Harold Rumph Jr.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the San Antonio Food Bank, the Coker Food Pantry or your local food pantry in memory of Virginia.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff at Sodalis Stone Oak and Guiding Light Hospice for the loving care they gave our mother, Virginia and grandmother, “Dede.”
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
