With deep sadness, we share that our beloved mother, Carmen Viviana Hendricks Escalona — our Ruri — passed away peacefully in the early hours of Thursday, February 12, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 88.
Born in Cabimas, Zulia State, Venezuela, she lived a full life defined by strength, fierce determination, unwavering faith in Jesus and the Virgin Mary, and boundless love for her family. From Cabimas and Maracaibo to Ann Arbor, Madison, Mérida and her beloved Chalet in La Puerta, Edo. Trujillo, and later Gainesville, The Woodlands, Atlanta, and San Antonio, she carried her warmth, resilience, and unmistakable spirit wherever she went.
She was our Commander in Chief, our Cacica, our protector, and the heart that held us together. She demanded the best from us, made us stronger every day, and loved us with a devotion that never wavered.
Ruri was a fighter in every sense — overcoming the many obstacles life placed in her path and teaching her children to do the same. Her laughter was contagious, her sharp sense of humor unforgettable, and her greatest concern was always for the wellbeing of others before herself.
Carmen had many passions and the heart of a protector, dedicating time and love to underserved communities in Venezuela and Texas. She loved sharing her wisdom, singing along to her favorite music, sewing, gardening, and reading. Fearless by nature, she delighted in dancing — especially Venezuelan folkloric dance — and in traveling, always eager to explore new cultures and foods. Above all, she was a fiercely loyal friend, sister, and mother who found her greatest joy in her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her loving sister, Else; her daughters, Elzys and Luvian; and her son, Luis. She also leaves behind four cherished grandchildren and four adored great-grandchildren. Also, Bob, Rosa and Scott.
She is preceded in death by her father, Edward Joseph Hendricks; her mother, Octavia Hendricks Escalona; and her grandson, Luis Roberto.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Luke Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas, officiated by Rev. Jorge Haro, MSpS. A reception will follow at 11:30 a.m. in the Joseph Room of the church. A private burial will take place at Boerne Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (svdpsa.org/donate).
Her legacy of strength, faith, and fierce love will live on in all of us. We are who we are because of her.
Rest in peace, Mom. Thank you for everything you gave, everything you taught us, and everything you were. We love you always and beyond.
