

Walter “Blair” Carroll, LTC retired U.S. Army, age 96 ½, passed away on Saturday, March 11, 2017. He lived with his loving wife of 70 years, Lorena “Chaney”, in San Antonio, Texas. He passed peacefully at home of complications of congestive heart failure.
Blair was born in Cullman, Alabama, on July 31, 1920. His father died when he was a young child in the middle of the depression. Grandparents and Aunts and Uncles helped to raise the young family and gave his beloved mother a home. He was very proud of his military service. He was stationed in four of the largest capitals in the world: Seoul, Korea; Tokyo, Japan; Paris, France; and his last overseas tour of duty was in Berlin, Germany. He retired in San Antonio from the Army and went back to work with Civil Service doing the same work that he had done while on active duty. He enjoyed playing golf from the time he was a young kid and loved living on the golf course as an adult with his wife. He was an ardent supporter of the Methodist Church and a regular member of AHUMC.
He is survived by his wife, Lorena “Chaney” Carroll; daughter, Pamela Lee Stephens, her husband Thomas; and two grandchildren, Stephenie, and Jackson “Jake”. He also was very close to several beloved nieces and nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Carroll; mother, Audie Carroll; brother, Edward Carroll; sister, Francis Wait; and brother-in-law, Charles Wait.
The Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Sunday, March 26, 2017 at Sunset Funeral Home. The Graveside Service will be 9:30 a.m., Monday, March 27, 2017 at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery with Full Military Honors. The Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, 27, 2017 at the Alamo Heights United Methodist Church (Garden Chapel), 825 E. Basse Rd., San Antonio, TX 78209 with a reception to follow. Condolences may be offered at www.sunsetfuneralhomesa.com.
