Dr. Wade Hampton Lewis, III, age 91, passed away on April 1, 2017, after a long-term struggle with Alzheimer's disease. A life-long resident of San Antonio and descendant of the Canary Islands, Wade graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1942, and at the young age of 16, enlisted and served with the Army Air Corps in Iwo Jima during World War II. After the war, he received his B.A. in Biology from Saint Mary's University, and his medical degree from Baylor University – College of Medicine, where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. While in general practice, he became certified by the American Board of Psychiatry. Subsequently, he became Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Physician-in-Charge of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Pavilion at Santa Rosa Medical Center, and later served as Medical Director and Administrator of Villa Rosa Hospital until 1991. He then became a staff physician at the Texas State Department of Mental Health and Retardation, and later served as Clinical Director of the San Antonio State Hospital until his retirement in 1997. Wade was privileged to have been a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Emeritus Fellow of the American College of Psychiatry, President of the Texas Psychiatric Society, President of the Central Neuropsychiatric Society, Member of the Bexar County Mental Health and Mental Retardation Board of Trustees, and Honorary Member of the Titus Harris Society. He also served on the Board of Directors of San Pedro State Bank and Kelly Field National Bank, and was a former Member of the Board of Governors of the Saint Peter's and Saint Joseph's Children's Home.
Wade was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Barbara Calamia Lewis. He is survived by his sister, Ann Sparkman, and his six children, Wade Lewis, IV (JoAnn), Melissa Burkett (Larry), Roy Lewis (Sharon), Leslie Watson (Fletcher), Jennifer McBeth (David), and Stephanie Lewis (David Adame); 21 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and cousins. When not at frequent family gatherings, Wade enjoyed traveling with his dear friends, cultivating orchids, gardening and communicating with others around the world on his ham radio. He also found great fulfillment as a devout catholic servant, providing communion to the home and hospital-bound as a Eucharistic Minister for many years.
Wade set an example to all as an inspired son, husband, father, physician, airman, servant and friend. He was greatly loved, and will be missed by all who knew him. The family also wants to thank the many caregivers that showed their love and compassion for him during his illness.
The family will receive friends and guests on Wednesday, April 5, from 6:00-7:00 P.M. at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
