Wow, I was just browsing around for past important people in my life and came across this. It is a big time kick in the gut. Walter was my boss 3 decades ago but he was more a great friend. The world needs more guys like him. He helped me through some very tough times and even helped me move on to bigger, better job opportunities. I am not good at keeping in touch with people and this makes me wish I was better. Margie, I am so sorry for this news and your loss.

Walter & I met at UT Aistin in early 1971, and we became best friends for the remainder our College years.  He was my true friend, he got me to start jogging with him for 2-3 miles every morning.  One of my greatest times with him was where invited me and 2 others from our apartment complex to go to Edge Falls with him near San Antonio.  We loaded my car up with beer, and spent the day in that beautiful spot, which has since become a private area.  We began playing bridge for fun, & then later, took our act to the Austin Bridge studio, & played duplicate bridge for several years, until Walter & Margie decided move to San Antonio, and Walter got a job there.  We watched numerous football games together, mostly with Walter pacing nervously, and cursing incessantly, to try to get UT to pull out another victory.  He introduced me to a lot of  things, especially his love of arrowhead hunting (& finding). He was my brother from another mother, and I loved him, and will always miss him! Dear Margie and Matthew, The entire Time Insurance family is thinking of you both.  Walter was such an amazing man and he will be deeply  missed.

I enjoyed having  the Bensons as "neighbors" and visiting with you, whether at your home or running into you out somewhere.  I don't think I've known a more friendly or kinder person than Walter.

First, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to Walter's wife and family.    I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Benson once during a lunch meeting when I first began doing business with Walter over a decade ago.  Walter was introduced to me and my company through a mutual business colleague, but we at Allied had the ultimate respect for Walter with his exceptional and professional work ethic.  He was always there for us and never let us down.  He kept us on our toes and we will all miss Walter deeply.  When you find such an honorable individual that took pride in his work and offered exceptional "customer service", like Walter did, well let me just say that I cannot imagine anyone out there that could possibly fill his shoes.    Walter, you will be missed, but my faith tells me that you are now beginning the next chapter of your life and I can now talk to you whenever I want and not just when we needed a surety/bond. Enjoyed figging for arrowheads with Walter over the years. He was a really avid enthusiast and always upbeat. I shared a screening table with him at what I believe was his last dig and he found a real nice point. I will miss sering him. My best to the family

I’ll be forever grateful to Walter for taking me to my first arrowhead dig & introducing me to the man who would become my husband of 20 years now, Bob McWilliams. Walter also graciously came to speak to my students about archeology for a class I was teaching during the summer of 2000. I will look for you in Heaven, dearest Walter. Walter's positive attitude and sense of humor were welcome additions to our poker group some 15 years ago. His inability to bluff was due to the fact that he wasn't a good liar, which in everything except poker is a great trait.  Everyone in the group knew if Walter placed a big bet, it was time to fold!!!! The memory of times spent with him will always be treasured.  Lesley and I send our thoughts and prayers to Margie and Matt. God bless.

Walter was a loving husband and father. He was a kind and gentle friend. Walter will be missed. Our sincere condolences to his lovely family.
