It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Walter Purvis Zettner, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Born on November 13, 1936, in Bexar County, Texas, Walter lived a life fueled by a passion for family, engineering, and the thrill of motorsports.
Walter's love for mechanics and motorsport was evident from an early age. In the early 1950s, he kept himself busy building and drag racing hot rods alongside friends and his brother, Daniel. He graduated from Northeast Rural High School (now MacArthur High School) before attending UT Austin, where he pursued both Mechanical Engineering and graduate studies in Business Administration.
Walter was an engineer to his core, known not only for his technical prowess but also for his enthusiasm for every facet of motor racing, from designing and building to competing in events himself. During the 1970s and 1980s, he became a beloved figure in the local motocross community, known for his uncanny ability to create, modify, and repair virtually any component on a motocross bike. His dedication, innovative spirit, and knack for fixing anything that crossed his path left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
In addition to his technical and racing pursuits, Walter found relaxation in the visual arts, frequently sketching and painting in watercolor and acrylic. Art was his creative escape, a quiet passion he enjoyed in moments of reflection.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Olivia McIntosh, and his three sons and their families: Walter Scott Zettner and his wife Peggy Zettner; Steven Dale Zettner and his wife Monika Zettner; and Brian Keith Zettner and his wife Tracey Zettner. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren, each carrying forward his legacy of resilience and passion.
Walter was preceded in death by his first wife, Gayla Dianne Hentzen Zettner, the mother of his children; his brother, Daniel Christian Zettner; and his first cousins, Carl Zettner, Stanley Zettner, and David Zettner.
Walter will be remembered as a loving husband, a dedicated father, and a mentor to many. His spirit lives on in the memories of those who loved him and in the enduring impact of his life's work.
