

Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Jean Banting; children, William Jr. and wife Gidget; Brian and wife Karin; Linda Krebs and husband Chris; and Eric and wife Julia. Grandchildren include Heather, Emily, Krista, Matthew, Katelynn, Hagen Elizabeth, William, Blaine, Hugh, and David Charles. Also survived is sister, Barbara Knowles and husband Dan; niece, Debra Faraguna and husband Joseph; brother-in-law, Douglas Banting and wife Patricia; niece, Kelly Shoemaker and husband Timothy; nephew, Christopher Banting and wife Ann and niece Tara. He is preceded by his parents, Charles and Florence HagenBurger of St. Albans, Queens, New York.
Bill was born on April 9, 1937 in Jamaica, Queens, New York. He served in the United States Army's 11th Armored Cavalry in Germany from 1956 to 1958. He married Jean, the love of his life, in 1964. After moving to Plainview, New York, he joined the Suffolk County Police Department in 1967. Bill was assigned to the Second Precinct and transferred to the Marine Bureau where he served for his last 8 years on the job. He worked the large boats, small boats, Barrier Beach Patrol, and the desk, where he was famous for playing his kazoo. Bill was one of the people responsible for the founding of the Steuben Association in Suffolk County. Bill retired in 1988 and moved to sunny Punta Gorda, Florida, before having a second retirement in Mosheim, Tennessee, on a 23-acre farm.
His children and grandchildren remember him as a loving and patient father and grandfather who encouraged them to pursue their goals and dreams.
Bill was an avid reader, informed citizen, and eclectic collector. He was a devoted football fan and enjoyed watching his New York Jets and second home team of the Tennessee Titans.
A visitation is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 7 at Porter Loring North, with a service to follow at 11:00 a.m. Darwin Huartson will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate William's life. A memorial service will be held in Greeneville, Tennessee at a later date.
