He was born in Takoma Park, Maryland to Clarence and Evelyn McCarthy. As a young man, William enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and proudly served his country. He then became a firefighter, Badge 17, working with the Alexandria Fire Department in Alexandria, Virginia, from 1964 until 1980. He worked on the department's ambulance rescue squad and went by the nickname "Slick."
After moving to San Antonio, he worked in civil service at Randolph Brooks AFB. He loved sailing and was a member of the Lake Canyon Yacht Club, Woodlawn Sailing Club and Fleet 128. He overcame many obstacles, including the loss of his wife to cancer four years ago, but he constantly approached life with laughter and joy - he loved a good cruise!
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 44 years, Beverly, and is survived by his children: William H. McCarthy Jr., Kevin McCarthy and Anne McCarthy; grandchildren: Taylor, Kacy, Corbin and Conner; his nieces and nephews, Carlen, Jackie, Patty, Elizabeth, Kathy, Janie, Suzie and Evelyn; his significant other of the last three years, Estela Mullins; and countless friends and neighbors whose lives he touched.
