William W. McCormick

Mr. McCormick was born Sept. 10, 1926 in Ennis, Texas. He had been a respected businessman and civic leader in San Antonio since 1970. He was the middle son of three boys, born to Clarence and Mable McCormick, who preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were his two brothers, James C. McCormick and Lynn L. McCormick both of Dallas.

Those left to cherish his memory, are his loving wife Shirley they just celebrated 62 wonderful and blessed years of marriage, his son Stephen W. McCormick and wife Katrina, daughter Kathleen Mathena and husband James. He also leaves grand-daughters Julie Coultress and husband Russell, Erin Camacho and husband Jonathan, and Jana Mathena, grandsons Ryan McCormick and wife Jill and Jeff Mathena. Mr. McCormick was also proud of his four great-granddaughters, Sarah, Emily and Claire Coultress and Kate McCormick as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

After serving in the Pacific during WWII, Mr. McCormick completed his college, earning two degrees from Southern Methodist University in Dallas. His professional career spanned 33 years all with Allied Stores Inc. After several positions in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio, Mr. McCormick was appointed President of Joskes of Texas in 1972. He was responsible for the expansion of Joskes by adding several new stores and the extension of the San Antonio River and Riverwalk to create what is now Rivercenter Mall.

In 1975, he chaired the United Way Campaign in San Antonio. And while working with Downtown, Inc., he proposed lighting the river with Christmas Lights, in addition to the traditional luminarias. Joskes and Sears donated the first lights to be placed along the river at Christmas time.

The family wishes to thank all the caregivers who assisted Mr. McCormick during his battle with cancer, especially the staff at Cancer Care Centers of South Texas and Compass Hospital of San Antonio.
