William J. Bill Reddell passed away on June 18, 2005, at the age of 89. His journey began in Rule, Texas on October 24, 1915 and led him through Tulia, Texas and on to Baylor University where he studied journalism. From there he moved to San Antonio to begin a 40 year career with the San Antonio Express News. During the last 25 years of his tenure there, he was editor of the editorial page. He finished his professional career at Valero Energy Corporation.
Bill served as a trustee of Baylor University and the Baptist Memorial Hospital System of San Antonio where he was chair for 2 terms. An active participant in the civic life of this city which he loved, he also faithfully served the First Baptist Church in numerous capacities over the span of 5 decades.
He was an independent pilgrim but his life was enriched by many family members and friends, some living, some gone.
His parents, Bess and W. C. Reddell; brothers, Dean, R. C., David, and Ray Reddell; and his first wife, Martha Peay, continued to bless his life through memory.
Those who will travel on without him are his wife of almost 55 years, Cynthia; his daughters, Jean Berggren, Judy Nolen and her husband, Don, and Molly Hornbuckle and her husband, Bill; a sister, Rebecca Evans; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
The family is grateful for those who aided Bill through his final days. These include Dr. Paul Smith, Mrs. Julie Webster, Northeast Baptist Hospital, Regent Care Center, as well as many other caregivers.
The service to celebrate the completion of his journey will be held on Wednesday, June 22, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Wilson Chapel, 515 McCullough Ave., with burial immediately following at Sunset Memorial Park.
