William (Bill) Tunstall Rogerson, Colonel, U.S. Army (Ret.), was born in Washington, D.C. on October 17, 1929. He is preceded in death by his “best friend ever” and wife, Georgelyn (Lyn) Coffelt Rogerson, parents David Louis and Grace Elizabeth Tunstall Rogerson, brother David L. Rogerson, Jr., and great-grandson, Tyler D. Mulligan.
On April 10, 1950, Bill married his high school sweetheart, Georgelyn. He admitted ever after, "It was the best decision I ever made. She became the very meaning and purpose of my life... my life itself." Georgelyn preceded him into God’s loving care on June 12, 1997, a day Bill said was "the day when I really died”. On October 8, 2023, in Windcrest, TX, Bill's own death made his reunion with his beloved wife official. He asks only that his relatives and friends find joy in their being together again.
Both Bill and Georgelyn surely wish only love, long life, and happiness for their three children: William T. Rogerson, Jr. and wife Lorna, [Harriman, TN]; Jacquelyn L. Scott and husband William, [Hampton, VA]; and Robert L. Rogerson and wife Kim, [Allen, TX]; for their 7 grandchildren: Michelle (Mrs. Christopher Mulligan), Sydney (Mrs. Daniel Downs), Kelli (Mrs. Cody Puterbaugh), Kyle (wife Jaydn), Megen, Lindsay, and Douglas Rogerson; and for their 11 great grandchildren with a 12th on the way. They also send their wishes to Bill’s remaining brother John Chester Rogerson and wife Dottie.
Bill's civilian education included a degree from the American University and an MBA from Babson College. His military career spanned four years in the USMC Reserve and 26 years on active duty with the Army. He was a Distinguished Graduate of the Infantry Officer Candidate School (OCS) in 1952, where early assignments took him to Camp Polk, LA, Korea, and Japan. Upon returning to the United States, he served as the Commander of the Saluting Battery and Caisson and Stables Section of the Third Infantry (The Old Guard) at Fort Myer, VA. After completing the Infantry Officer Advanced Course, he taught ROTC classes for four years at East Tennessee State University. Bill was a graduate of the Command & General Staff College, Armed Forces Staff College, and Army War College. In 1965, he served in the Vietnam (VN) Delta as the senior advisor of an ARVN Infantry Division. His Pentagon tours included roles in the Offices of the Army Comptroller, Assistant Secretary of the Army, Financial Management, and the Secretary of Defense, Comptroller. In 1973, he was placed on the Honor Roll in the Infantry Officer Candidate Hall of Fame. His last assignment was as DCSRM, Fifth Army at Fort Sam Houston, where he retired in 1976. After retiring from the Army, Bill joined the USAA Life Insurance Company, where he served as the Director for Policy Owner Services.
Bill felt privileged to be an Honorary Member of the Tuesday Musical Club for over 21 years, working with the Junior Club and serving as the main club's stage manager and usher for many of their events.
Bill and Georgelyn joined the Windcrest United Methodist Church in 1975, where he faithfully served for many years as an usher and on several committees.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the dear friends and special carers who were there for him and made such a difference in these last few months. You know who you are!
