

Dr. William A. Smith, 92 years old, passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2017 in San Antonio, Texas. Bill was born in Iron River, Michigan to Henry and Lillian Smith. He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He attended Alma College, followed by attending Dental School at the University of Michigan, class of 1952. He remained a big fan of Michigan Football his entire life. Dr. Smith started General Dentistry practice in Fenton, MI after finishing dental school.
Bill met his wife to be Maria de Jesus Garcia, while attending an ROTC summer camp in San Antonio on a double-blind date, and they later married on June 30, 1955. Three years later the couple welcomed son, Michael Smith in 1958.
In 1961 Dr. Smith returned to the University of Michigan to get his specialty in Periodontics. After finishing his specialty coursework, the family moved to San Antonio in 1963 where he started a Periodontics Practice.
Bill was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served as an usher for 40 plus years. He was active in the San Antonio Rotary Club and the Southwest Society of Periodontists, where he served as Treasurer. Dr. Smith retired from his practice in 1995 and enjoyed the next 20 years volunteering at the San Antonio Christian Dental Clinic. Bill was an avid golfer.
William was preceded in death by wife, Marie "Chuchi" Smith and is survived by son, Michael A. Smith; sister, Barbara Ann Specht; sister-in-law Mary Esther Garcia de Fernández; nieces and nephews, Scott Specht, Cheryl Montgomery, Mary Esther Fernandez de De la Garza, Marta Fernandez de Holguera, Julio Fernandez, Francisco Fernandez and Ana Laura Fernandez de Moral. He will greatly be missed.
