

William Jasper Varner went to be with the Lord on October 26, 2024 at the age of 95. Bill was born at Bramlet Hospital in Oxford, Mississippi in 1929. He graduated from University High School in 1948 and joined the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict. He started work at IBM in 1952 and retired after 41 years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in San Antonio since July 1, 1953. Bill met the love of his life, Joan, and they married at Water Valley, Mississippi on April 30, 1954. This was truly a marriage made in Heaven.
Bill enjoyed working with organizations such as South Texas Arthritis Foundation, Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering, TAME, USTOO, Prostate Cancer Education and Support, Sunrise Optimist Club, The Gideons, and was advisory for the Electronics Department at St. Phillips College. Bill also served as President of the South Texas Arthritis Foundation. He established and coordinated speakers for the Prostate support monthly meetings. He was an editor of the Optimist Club and Treasurer for the Arthritis Foundation. Bill loved to share his knowledge of the Bible and enjoyed teaching Bible Study classes. He also enjoyed tooling around in his red MGA which his loving brother restored. He was inquisitive and could often be found tinkering in his garage. Bill adored his family, and his Christian faith was undeniable. He was a great husband, father, and brother. Bill and Joan loved San Antonio, Texas. He always said that he had the best neighbors and friends in the world. Bill lived a long, wonderful life and he will be greatly missed.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Joan Varner, his son, William T. Varner, MD, and his brother, Robert Varner. He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Terri Varner.
Services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, November 15, 2024, at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, Texas 78218. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
The family would like to thank the wonderful physicians and nurses at Methodist Hospital, specifically Dr. Wassim Choucair and Dr. Ben Stephens for their kindness, compassion, and care.
