Winford H. “Dub” Baker Jr. of San Antonio passed away peacefully on January 13, 2021 at the age of 92 years old. Dub was born February 13, 1928 in Denton, Texas to Winford and Henrietta Baker. He was raised in Ellis County and graduated from Bardwell High School in 1946. After high school, he moved to Dallas and began working for National Casket Company. Dub was a proud veteran who served honorably in the United States Marine Corps and was the sole Texan on the Marine Corps basketball team. After returning from the service, he married the love of his life, Gwen in 1950. Dub returned to National Casket Company, which flourished into a lifetime of wonderful business associates and a rewarding career, working as a shipping clerk and retiring as Regional Manager in 1999.
In 1958, the family moved to San Antonio and enjoyed many years in the outdoors, water skiing, tubing, fishing, hunting and attending the Alamo Trail Ride for 14 years with the starting point at the Alamo Village in Brackettville, Texas, camping all along the way to the rodeo grounds in San Antonio. Camping started out early on in the back of the wood-grained sided station wagon, then in a small popup trailer, then to a multiroom full size trailer, and finally having their custom dream motorcoach built. For many years, they enjoyed great times, food, dominoes, cards, golf, fishing, and thousands of miles with their lifelong friends motorhoming across the US. When not on the road, Dub found pleasure working in his back yard shop that he built doing all kind of do-it-yourself projects. In addition to his love for the outdoors, Dub was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan. An important part of Dub’s life was his dedication as a longtime member of Castle Hills First Baptist Church, where he served the Lord in many ways.
Dub was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gwen; two brothers and a brother-in-law. He is survived by two sons Mike and wife Cindy Baker, Steve and wife Stacy Baker, and four grandchildren Brian Baker, Breanne Baker, Molly Asvestas and husband Aaron, all of San Antonio, and Morgan Baker of Palm Beach, Florida, his sister Lavada Mitchell of Garland, Texas, and sister-in-law Nancy McCormack and husband Chuck of Waxahachie, Texas, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to give special thanks to Claudia and all the wonderful, caring staff at Just Like Home Care and all the compassionate professionals at Embrace Hospice.
